This is a two-part class that will continue through two terms to allow for substantial discussion of the films and issues. In Part 1, we will view and discuss films that depict events of the Cold War through the time period of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The class discussion will interweave the content of the films with the major issues, events, and public figures of the Cold War. Film clips from the movies and Cold War documentaries will be used in the class presentation. Class members will be asked to view assigned films prior to class and come prepared for a lively discussion. The films assigned for Part 1 will be Trumbo (2015), Good Night and Good Luck (2005); Bridge of Spies (2015); The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965); Thirteen Days (2000); and The Courier (2020. The films will be available to Osher members online from the Marriott library, or can be watched through the usual online sources, such as Prime Video, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Sling, and Xfinity. One or two DVD copies of the films will also be available to borrow from the instructor.
