This section of our Art History Survey shifts to a focus on the developments in ancient Greece and Rome that laid the foundations for much of our cultural history since that time. It will cover the Early Aegean civilizations of the Minoans and Myceneans, the various developments in the arts on mainland Greece during the Archaic and Classical Periods, the Roman Monarchy (under the Etruscans), and the Roman Republic until the ascent of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. Class members will be introduced to (or reminded of) some of the most significant works and discover the profound and prolific art of the Ancient World. We will appreciate the cultural contributions of these art periods with an understanding of their ongoing influence today and the way our contemporary society reframes them for each generation. We will draw from Howard Gardner's "Art Through the Ages" and online sources such as SmartHistory. No textbook is required.
