Atlas of the Self: Discovering Art Through Personal Geography
Lifelong Learning

Each of us has a personal map of the world--our own personal network of habits, relationships, passions, and routines. The official geographies that make up sanctioned maps give us one of the surfaces on which we build our own world but they are not the only ones; we rewrite the landscape with our bodies every day. Engage in a personal remapping of Salt Lake City as you investigate the structures of the city as YOU know it; the city that is part of your self. You'll start your artistic exploration by layering memories and connections over official maps of the Salt Lake Valley, drawing and labeling the associations that most define your understanding of this place: the coffee shop you always go to, the corner where you met a friend, the place you grew up. Moving from a first layer of association, you'll fine-tune a sense of movement across the city, pinpointing not only the landmarks of your actual life, but also the ley lines of a city known only to you. You'll leave class with a unique and priceless artwork collaging your own experiences onto a map of the city; an Atlas of the Self.
