Course Description

One of the master stylists of the American novel, Edith Wharton writes of the "Gilded Age" with a sharp, ironic eye. Her tone-perfect novels of manners are rich explorations of the issues of class, sex, and freedom in upper class New York society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. They remain compelling reading--and perhaps even freshly timely in our new, ersatz Gilded Age. Please read each novel before our discussions.
