Course Description

Join one of the U's leading literature scholars to explore new works by two contemporary masters of global fiction: Kiran Desai's The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, which was shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize, and Rabih Alameddine's The True True Story of Rajah the Gullible (and His Mother), which won the 2025 National Book Award. Both are compelling and engaging novels that address contemporary cultural and social issues with passion, warmth, and humor. We'll discuss them as keen reflections on globalization, migration, family, identity, and as brilliant examples of the art of the novel. Please read each of the assigned selections before the class discussion.
