Anasazi Culture in Utah

Five-hundred years before the arrival of the Europeans, the ancient culture of the Anasazi flourished in the southwestern United States. From 700 CE to 1200 CE, the Anasazi were the most complex and populous culture in North America. They developed large towns, complex agriculture, magnificent pottery, a road network, and a trading system extending into California and Northern Mexico. Remnants of their culture are well preserved in caves and canyons of southeastern Utah. Archaeologists estimate that there are at least 150,000 archaeological sites in San Juan County alone. The instructor has explored and photographed these sites for over 25 years. We will explore these sites together through photographs and we will learn the details of this fabulous culture.
