A "bildungsroman" is a coming-of-age novel, and this is one of my favorites. It explores what growing up means during a time of war--and what happens when the enemy is within. Knowles focuses on the war within the human heart, a personal war that leads inevitably to the loss of childhood innocence. The narrator fights his war at Devon, a private boys' boarding school, where he kills his enemy and makes "a separate peace."
