The Coming Wave: Artificial Intelligence, Power, and Our Future

Inspired by Mustafa Suleyman's landmark book, "The Coming Wave," this course explores the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and its transformative impact on society. We will trace the historical development of AI, examine the technological breakthroughs that have accelerated its capabilities, and consider its expanding role in fields such as science, education, and medicine. At the same time, the course confronts the profound risks posed by these systems, including the potential for mass unemployment, government and corporate surveillance, autonomous weapon systems, and even a possible existential threat to human civilization. Blending technological insight with philosophical and ethical inquiry, class members will become equipped to critically engage with one of the most consequential forces shaping our future.
