"This course examines the transformative role of social health-a critical but often overlooked dimension of overall well-being. Expanding beyond traditional emphases on physical and mental health, and drawing on the work of Robert Putnam and Kasley Killam, we will explore how meaningful relationships and inclusive communities are foundational to thriving societies. Through engaging discussions, reviews of recent research, interactive activities, and optional field trips, participants will develop practical skills to strengthen personal and social networks, bridge divides, and foster inclusive communities. Highlights include a special screening of the recent documentary "Join or Die", which examines the decline of civic engagement and its impact on society; an introduction to the Dignity Index to explore and practice respectful engagement across differences; and a culminating collaborative project designed to strengthen community within Osher. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of social health and actionable strategies to create connections that inspire belonging and engagement."
