The Muslim population in Russia, while a relatively small percentage (10-15%) of the overall populace, still represents a significant number (15-20 million people). Furthermore, this population is concentrated in two key regions where Muslims are the majority (North Caucasus and Tatarstan/Bashkortostan), making them important players in Russian politics, both domestically and internationally. This course will delve into these Muslim-majority areas, exploring their historical conversion to Islam, the demographic, social, and cultural distinctions between Muslim and non-Muslim Russians, and the internal differences between the two Muslim-majority regions themselves.
