Do movies influence what the public believes about the judicial system? In this class we will examine how lawyers and the legal system are portrayed in film. After viewing and discussing Man for All Seasons, Witness for the Prosecution, Compulsion, Inherit the Wind, Philadelphia, A Few Good Men, and The Rainmaker, Osher members will better understand the work of lawyers and how the criminal and civil judicial systems tackle the complex cultural issues of society. Class analysis will help students understand the styles and techniques used by filmmakers to enhance the use of reason, passion, and emotional appeal in the legal dramas studied. They will also recognize the parallel between a filmmaker and a trial lawyer as each works to prepare and present a compelling and emotion-packed story. To enhance class discussion students are responsible for watching films at home before class. Check for availability at your public library or online sources such as iTunes, Amazon, and Netflix.
