In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this course will delve into the lives and contributions of five signers who are often overlooked in history. While prominent figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams are widely recognized, our attention will focus on individuals whose stories deserve greater attention and recognition. We will explore the backgrounds and legacies of the following signers: Charles Carroll of Carrollton (Maryland), William Whipple (New Hampshire), Thomas Lynch Jr. (South Carolina), George Walton (Georgia), and John Hancock (Massachusetts). Each of these men took significant personal risks by signing the Declaration of Independence, demonstrating their commitment to the cause of freedom. Through class member discussions, we will honor their sacrifices and examine the pivotal roles they played in shaping the nation's history.
