From Paganism to Christianity: The Evolution of Religions and Rituals in Medieval Europe
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

You probably know that Christmas was originally a pagan holiday--but what about Easter or Halloween? Are there other holidays with pagan roots? This course explores the origins and evolution of European religious practices that are still celebrated today. We'll familiarize ourselves with the aspects of medieval paganism and how people understood their relationship with nature, spirits, and deities through various rituals and ceremonies. Through a historical lens, we'll trace the impact of Christianity on European pagans like Vikings, Celts, and other pre-Christian groups, and how their cultures evolved, merged with, or were replaced by Christianity. By examining these rituals and their transformations, we can better understand our European ancestors and how their beliefs shaped--and continue to influence--our modern world.
