Halloween a religious observance? New Year's celebrated in March? The first Thanksgiving not in Massachusetts? Easter bunnies? Jack-O-Lanterns? Why are presidents elected on a Tuesday in November? Why is Labor Day not May 1? This class, the third in a series about the history of holidays, explores the origin and development of major American holidays and observances from New Year's to Easter and Halloween to Thanksgiving with numerous religious, patriotic, ethnic, commemorative, and celebratory stops along the way. (Christmas was covered in two previous classes.) As always, illustrations there will be aplenty.
