Globetrotting with Uncle Sam: Our Foreign Service Stories
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Taught by two retired diplomats, this course aims to educate on the roles and functions of the State Department as the main foreign policy arm of the US government. Using their own experiences, totaling more than 50 years working in Embassies and consulate overseas as well as Washington, DC, the two instructors will describe what a typical US Embassy or consulate abroad looks like, and how multiple US government agencies work together overseas to protect and promote US security and prosperity and execute foreign policy as directed by the White House. With just 0.5 percent of the entire Federal budget, the State Department has an outsized impact on the lives of Americans at home and abroad. Come learn what diplomats do and what it is like to represent the US abroad!
