Imagining the Ancient Earth: Fossils in Early Visual and Material Culture
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Ancient interpretations of fossils through art transformed bones and imprints into symbolic, religious, and mythical figures. Early examples include prehistoric cave and rock imagery, Greek "monster" imagery, and indigenous rock drawings depicting extinct creatures. Through the study of visual art and material culture across past cultures, this course will explore how fossils informed our knowledge and understanding of the natural world through time.
