Utah Opera Preview: Puccini's "Madame Butterfly"
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

In this groundbreaking new production created by an all-Japanese and Japanese American creative team, Madame Butterfly's story is framed from a bold new point of view, seen through the fantastical realm of virtual reality that allows fact and fiction to blur. With some of the most breathtaking music in all of opera, you will follow the passionate journey of Japanese geisha, Cio-Cio-San, and her fleeting romance with the American naval officer, Pinkerton-and feel the heartbreak as she awaits his return with unwavering faith. Utah Opera Education Manager Kevin Nakatani and Dr. Carol Anderson will offer historical perspective and creator biographies, share highlights of this beautiful and beloved score, and discuss how modern artists can reenvision a classic opera through a modern lens while honoring the music and storyline. Attendees will have the option to visit a working rehearsal after the class, and will be offered a discount code for ticket purchases.
