Christmas History Part I

This gloriously illustrated course will examine Christmas, the most popular holiday in America. In addition to exploring the history of Christmas, the evolution of Christmas music and the representation of Christmas in popular culture—movies, television specials and magazines—special attention will be given to the creation and various incarnations of Santa Claus as well as his social, cultural, and economic impact in America and beyond. The class will be followed winter term with Christmas History Part II, the items and traditions associated with Christmas—trees, wreaths, cards, creches, gift giving, seasonal foods and drinks, commercialization, distinctive customs around the world, and much more.
