Third Annual Wells Fargo Economic Summit for Nonprofits

Event to Aid Nonprofit Leaders Through the Reshaping of Charitable Giving

May 25, 2011 – Nonprofit leaders in Utah have faced numerous obstacles during the past two years due to challenges in the economic landscape. In response, the University of Utah's Nonprofit Academy for Excellence in partnership with Wells Fargo and the Utah Nonprofits Association (UNA) will bring together Utah's nonprofit leaders to discuss new strategies of charitable giving with major donors in our community.

The third annual Wells Fargo Economic Summit for Nonprofits will be held June 2, 2011 in the 11th Floor Atrium of the Wells Fargo Center, 299 S. Main St., Salt Lake City. The summit will focus on philanthropy, conveying what funders have experienced in today's economy and how this has affected their strategies for giving. The event will include an update on Utah's economy and how it relates to the national economic picture and a panel discussion with local philanthropists on key issues facing funders today.

"It's no secret that nonprofits have been hit hard during the past few years," said Anne O'Brien, Director of Professional Education at the U. "Nonprofit leaders have been consistently faced with tough, sometimes heart-wrenching problems. Many of them are realizing that priorities are changing and have to reevaluate their fundraising goals and expectations."

Featured speakers at the 2011 Summit include Spencer F. Eccles, Chairman Emeritus of the Intermountain Region for Wells Fargo; Greg Winegardner, Utah Regional President for Wells Fargo; Natalie Gochnour, Executive Vice President and Chief Economist of the Salt Lake Chamber; and Alan Hall, founder and director of Mercato Partners.

"We are very pleased to host these generous community supporters and to provide our nonprofit leaders with such valuable insight," said Denise Winslow, VP of Community Relations for Wells Fargo.

The recent economic downturn has seen challenges in global philanthropy. As a result, the challenges to the economy have created a great deal of uncertainty for both the granter and the grantee.

"It's been a turbulent couple of years, but a brighter future is in sight," said Gwen Springmeyer, Executive Director, Utah Nonprofits Association. "Nonprofits play a critical role in our state and the goal of the 2011 Economic Summit for Nonprofits is to provide information to nonprofit leaders so they can make smart fundraising decisions."
