Medication Policy
Youth Education

1. Purpose

To ensure the health and safety of all campers, students, and staff by minimizing the risk of misuse or mishandling of medication in classes and camps.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all campers and students at Youth Education.

3. Guidelines for Medications at camp

Youth Education program participants who are taking prescription medication under the direction of a licensed healthcare professional are required to submit the medication to the designated individual overseeing the youth education medication collection and distribution, as detailed in this policy.

Prior to, or upon arrival at camp at the time of check in, parent/guardian is responsible for remitting prescription medication to camp staff in compliance with the following:

  • Prescription medication is required to be in the original pharmacy container including the original label, child safety cap, and participant’s full name.
  • Over-the-counter Medications shall be contained in a clear sealable storage bag with the participant’s full name and name of medication clearly written on the bag.
  • Exceptions would be for a limited amount of medication for life-threatening conditions carried by a participant, such as but not limited to, epi-pens, inhalers, and insulin.
  • The quantity of the medication provided shall be sufficient to last through the duration of the camp experience.
    • If Youth Education is not supplied with enough medication for the duration of the camp, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to supply additional medication
  • Parent/Guardian completes and signs Medication Form which includes the following information:
    1. Participant name
    2. Name of the medication
    3. Specific instructions for when the medication should be administered and the dosage to be administered
    4. Method of administration
    5. Quantity of medication provided
  • Youth Education reserves the right to refuse to accept any medication that fails to meet these standards

4. Guidelines for Youth Education Storage

Upon receipt of participant medication, the YE staff member will transfer the medication packets to secure and locked storage containers. Those accepting the medication from the parent/guardian is charged with the following responsibilities:

  1. Verifying that the submitted medication and information meets the requirements in Section 3, including confirmation of adequate quantity for the duration of the camp.
  2. Assessing the participant’s knowledge of his/her medication.
  3. Documenting any limited amounts of medication for life-threatening conditions that may stay with campers or staff (e.g., bee sting kits, inhalers).

Youth Education staff are responsible for distribution and shall maintain possession and control of medications during distribution. Youth Education staff shall create and maintain a daily medication log which records the date, time, and dosage distributed. They will verify that the student self-administers the medication as directed in the information packet submitted by the parent/guardian. When administering medication, another camp employee shall confirm proper administration of the medication and initial the daily log. All daily logs shall be maintained by the camp. Medications shall remain in locked storage containers except when being distributed by Youth Education staff to a specific participant.
